How much does a barista earn?
Baristas prepare espresso and filter coffee, serve guests and maintain machines and workflow behind the counter – from classic cafés to specialty coffee bars. Milk texturing, extraction, sensory skills and often sales and advice are part of everyday work. In Germany, orientation salaries after training or as a qualified barista typically range from about 2,100 to 2,900 euros gross per month, depending on region, concept (chain hospitality vs. specialty) and responsibility. During a hospitality apprenticeship, pay usually lies between about 780 and 1,100 euros gross. The overview below shows regional ranges as orientation figures for 2026.

Job and everyday work
Day to day, baristas combine craft precision at the machine with service and pace. Extraction, milk prep, hygiene and guest communication matter as much as caring for the espresso machine, grinder and workstation.
- Extract espresso and filter coffee to recipe and quality standards and taste the results
- Prepare milk foam and latte-art drinks and offer seasonal and signature beverages
- Clean and calibrate espresso machines, grinders and bar equipment and fix minor faults
- Advise guests, take orders and run counter and café service
- Apply hygiene, food-safety and occupational safety rules consistently behind the bar
- Coordinate with kitchen, floor service and suppliers so quality, pace and food cost stay on track
